About Holy Comforter
Holy Comforter is an Episcopal Church in Broomfield, CO. We are part of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado.
-
Holy Comforter Episcopal Church’s roots go back to 1958, when twelve Broomfield families, who had been worshiping in Episcopal churches in Denver, began to meet in the basement of a home in the little town of Broomfield, Colorado. At the time, Broomfield was a new community with a population of about 4000. These families asked the Bishop of the Diocese of Colorado to start an Episcopal mission in Broomfield.
Holy Comforter continued to grow, and a three acre lot was purchased in 1962, along what was a country road on the far west side of Broomfield, and it remains our location today.
Ground breaking took place on May 17, 1964, with music from a piano in the back of a pickup truck — early evidence of our deep appreciation of music, and the role it can play in worship. Our original pipe organ was built from scratch by a congregational member.
In 2001, we built a beautiful addition to the building, including a new sanctuary and parish hall. We had been growing and thriving, and felt prepared to take on a large mortgage. Then, in 2007, like many Episcopal churches during this time period, we encountered division from the politics surrounding the decision made in 2003 by the national Episcopal church to elect V. Gene Robinson, an openly gay priest, as bishop of New Hampshire. In 2007, a large portion of our congregation left with our priest at the time, who disagreed with the direction of the National Church.
As a result, the church became ‘mission status’, as opposed to ‘parish status’, due to the reduction in income and the large mortgage. But, in an amazing story of renewal — with strong leadership and support of the bishop, region, and diocese — Holy Comforter recovered and again thrived. In 2016, we regained parish status, added staff and ministries which incorporated new members, and increased our involvement in the Local community.
In 2020, when the pandemic rattled the world, Holy Comforter also experienced a transition in clergy leadership. We continued to worship and have community through the pandemic, and in the past few years have found ourselves renewing our community spiritually, relationally, and financially. Following a major year of financial rebuilding in 2023, we were blessed when two parishioners stepped forward with gifts which paid off the remainder of our mortgage!
In June of 2024, we entered our current period of transition when we began the process to search for our next priest. Initially, a pair of retired clergy were our Interim Priests until this past March, and since April, our current Interim Priest has been with us. We have been taking this time of transition to renew ourselves as a congregation and prayerfully prepare the way for our next leader.
We are looking forward to calling the next person who will continue with us to write the next Chapter of Holy Comforter’s history!

Our Faith
We are proud to be one of over 100 Episcopal congregations in Colorado. As an Episcopal Church, we are one expression of a wonderfully diverse Christian faith. We affirm that the Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God, that the ancient Nicene Creed summarizes our core beliefs, that the sacraments of baptism and communion are integral to our identity, and that our bishops are our chief pastors and teachers.
Our baptismal vows call on us to seek and serve Christ in our neighbors, to strive for justice and peace for all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being. We are committed to being a community that lives into these vows.
We are an affirming community, who welcomes all people, regardless of their gender, race, sexuality, religious background, or personal beliefs.
The Book of Common Prayer guides our worship together, and is used by Episcopalians all over the world. In it are the core expressions of our faith, including the Nicene Creed.

We are a strongly lay-led congregation who values our clerical leadership and guidance. Holy Comforter has a mix of couples and singles, both older and younger couples, along with a growing number of young families, many of whose kids attend our programming for children and youth.
Our members come from a broad geographic area, some travel more than 20 miles to church, others have a 10 minute walk.
