13th Annual Broomfield Farmers' Market

TUESDAYs
4 - 7pm
June 13 through september 26, 2023

Welcome to the Broomfield Farmers’ Market

Our mission is to create a destination that connects the community with healthy food and local farmers and a destination that demonstrates the stewardship commitment of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.

Now entering our 13th season, we continue to be all-volunteer operated, with all proceeds beyond our operating expenses being donated back to the local community. This year we are pleased to welcome 27 vendors, plus food trucks, live music, a face painter, special activities, and more.

The Broomfield Farmers’ Market is all-volunteer-operated and is dedicated to creating a destination that connects the community with healthy food and local farmers.

“Even though we are sponsored by Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, the church’s governing body directed when when we were founded 13 years ago that any proceeds generated above our operating costs should be returned to the greater community.” Dave Carter explained.

The Broomfield Farmers’ Market will continue from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. each Tuesday through the end of September. If you are able to assist, contact Dave Carter.

2022 Farmers’ Market Highlights

Last fall, the Broomfield Farmers’ Market at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church was honored with the “Heart of Gold” recognition by the Broomfield Community Foundation. Thank you, Cindy Pickerel, for nominating us for this award. We were humbled by the recognition. It was strong affirmation of the commitment of our team of volunteers, along with our dedicated vendors and shoppers each week. It also symbolized something larger.

When we launched the farmers’ market in 2011, we established the mission, “To create a destination that connects the community with healthy food and local farmers, and a destination that demonstrates the stewardship commitment of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.” From Day One, the market was never about “us,” but rather about outreach to our larger community. In 2022, for example, we distributed $2,580 in $20 vouchers to local educators during our annual Teacher Appreciation Day, provided local moms with $610 in vouchers through our partnership with Broomfield Health and Human Services through the WIC program, and continued to double purchasing power for residents on the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program funded solely through fees we received from our vendors.

We also ended the season with net results of $1,616, which we will utilize to get our 2023 season underway. At the outset, we were viewed largely as a church project in Broomfield. The Heart of Gold award underscored that we are a community asset. The Heart of Gold award came, though, as we experienced an extremely challenging season after emerging from the Covid pandemic. Like many community activities sidelined during the past two years, we struggled to get back to “full speed.” Last summer, we averaged about 20 vendors per week, compared to 35 in 2019. Our traffic count was also reduced to about 450 – 700 visitors each week, roughly half of our 2019 season.

We need additional volunteers. You can offer your services in a variety of ways to help us make 2023 our best season yet. Please reach out to Dave Carter or any of our market volunteers to ask how you can join our team and keep the Heart of Broomfield beating strong.

OUR MISSION

Colorado’s farmers and ranchers produce a cornucopia of healthy food, and provide open space, wildlife habitat and other amenities that are integral to the quality of life we all enjoy. Connecting those small farmers and ranchers with customers through a farmers’ market setting strengthens the stewardship of the land, while increasing urban residents’ access to healthy food products.

At the outset of our market, Holy Comforter’s Bishop’s Committee (governing board) directed that our market should be dedicated to community outreach. All revenues generated above our operating expenses and capital requirements are donated each year to community organizations. We offer three vendor booths weekly free of charge to area non-profits. And, our generous vendors donate unsold produce and bakery goods to Broomfield FISH, the community food bank.

OUR HISTORY

We trace our roots to an evening in October 2010, when volunteers of Holy Comforter’s environmental stewardship ministry first conceived of transforming the vacant lot in front of the church into a community farmers’ market. That tiny seed of any idea quickly sprouted and blossomed.

The market opened on June 14, 2011 with 16 vendors, live music, and hundreds of shoppers. As word of the great vendors, the cornucopia of fresh food, free entertainment, and friendly volunteers spread throughout the community, our market quickly grew.

In 2019, we hosted 37 vendors and 34 community organizations, and welcomed 12,822 shoppers during the market season. The Broomfield Farmers’ Market at Holy Comforter has grown into a community gathering spot, where neighbors find fresh food, great music, food trucks and fellowship.

We have been elected twice as the Colorado’s Favorite Farmers’ Market in an on-line poll conducted by the American Farmland Trust!

DEDICATED TO community OUTREACH

SNAP Benefits are doubled - At the market, shoppers on food assistance can double their SNAP credits to be used on all of our fresh, locally grown produce.

Residents enrolled in the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) nutrition assistance program can receive free $10 vouchers to purchase fresh produce at the market. This is made possible in a joint effort with Broomfield Health and Human Services.

Non-profit organizations can receive a 10x10 booth to help them connect with the local community at no charge.

Revenues in excess of our operating costs are given back to our local community because of all our volunteers.

Unsold produce is donated to Broomfield FISH at the end of each market day.

A COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE

The Broomfield Farmers’ Market offers a welcomed respite from the hectic pace of daily living. Each Tuesday afternoon, residents come to shop, relax, and enjoy the live music from the Tillman’s Market Stage.

Our Iron Chef competition each August has become a signature event for the Broomfield Farmers’ Market. There, two area chefs square off to see who can prepare the best appetizer and main course from ingredients sourced from our market.

volunteers always needed

Thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers sporting green polo shirts, much of the work of the farmers’ market appears seamless, even when it is not. Our volunteers directed traffic, welcomed visitors and assisted with SNAP transactions at the market managers’ tent and much more.

Participation in this ministry need not be weekly, and can accommodate work and vacation schedules. During this off-season, please prayerfully consider if you would like to serve as a farmers’ market volunteer next year. For information, please contact Market Manager Dave Carter at 303-594-4420.

JUBILEE MINISTRY

The Broomfield Farmers’ Market at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church at Hwy 287 and West 10th Avenue was officially designated as a Jubilee Ministry by the national Episcopal Church for its work in helping to bring healthy, locally-grown food to area residents, and especially to people in need. The National Episcopal Church created the Jubilee Ministry program two decades ago to support efforts across the nation and world to battle poverty and injustice.

Our farming journey started with the realization that food can be medicine. Shortly after Atticus was born in 2009, he developed awful eczema, and we discovered it was due to food allergies. Working to heal him, led us down the path of a whole food diet including a focus on meat from healthy naturally raised animals. In 2018 the opportunity arose to leave LA and move back to Colorado to start farming the land where Asa grew up, and Sisu Farms was born. We are on a mission to continue to improve the methods we use to better utilize the land, water, and animals.
